Adding to Greece's burdens, the National Gallery of Greece in Athens reports that two items have been stolen from the museum just prior to dawn Monday morning. The National Gallery should not be confused with the National Archaeological Museum which most visitors to Greece see. The National Gallery hosts more modern works by both Greek and foreign artists, primarily paintings, and they had just hosted an international exhibition including pieces by Albrecht Durer and others. As of this post, the exact items had not been identified, and it is not clear if they were part of the permanent collections or the recent exhibit. Update: The Athens Macedonia News Agency is reporting that one of the missing items is an early Picasso which was a gift to the Museum. More on the National Gallery theft from the AMNA.
